another look at journalFEST 2010

another highlight of journalFEST? a class by juliana coles, soulful teacher and guide. i had heard about the introspective nature of her classes and was a bit intimidated by what i had heard. a lot of soul-searching and angst. i needn't have been concerned. while, yes, there was some inner work to be done, she led us in a safe environment where you could look as deeply or as simply as you wished into your personal thoughts. there was no gnashing of teeth or blood extracted! appreciated the soul content and the verve. i was incredibly happy with the outcome. journal pages filled with meaning for no one but me. even the one above, which on first sight may be nothing special to the viewer, has import to me. and that's what art journaling is all about.....creatively expressing the individual person. that, is quite satisfying to this artist.

this was truly an off-the-cuff collage. in a workshop given by carla sonheim at journalFEST 2010, we created a fast-paced-don't-think-much collage, using one magazine. i haven't the foggiest notion of why i chose the images i did, or why i composed this piece in just this way - but that's what came out in the end. and i surely do love the spontaneous creative burst!

look-see here! pictured above is a groovy little journal that i made outta all the trades i was given at the fabulous journalFEST held at fort worden in port townsend , WA last october. a rip-roaring good time of workshops with the latest and greatest mixed media and book arts teachers - the like of which i know you've heard of.....orly avinari, juliana cole, carla sonheim, daniel essing............a bunch o' talented folks.

well, this journal was made out of a plain ole' manila file folder and brown paper lunch bags - all sewn up with red thread. i had a blast. inside? all the fodder that teesha moore had tucked inside our confirmation packet. room numbers and our classes and all the colorful info on the treats in store for us.

what's with the term "trades", you ask? well, unofficially, peeps make some kinda of wonderful little handmade creative do-dah's to fit into our art journals. stickers, tickets, old photos, drawings, prints of original artwork, bookmarks - the gamut - anything that will lay flat! it was great fun to collect these treasures and a mainstay at journalFEST and artFEST.

so, take a gander at the tidbits and a look into a wonderful artist retreat. the registration for JF 2011 os coming up on teesha's website - go check it out. i'll be there! my b-day falls right around that time and it is now my birthday present to GO and have a blast! hope to see you there - come suss me out!

spent a lovely and relaxing afternoon with seattle artist, courtney putnam

(go check out her blogs and website. she is an artist and a body-work massage lady - very sweet spirit). courtney invited six of us to her home/studio saturday - encouraging us to play with glitter glue, paper, paint and images in a three hour workshop on art journaling. while i have a pretty decent handle on the subject, i think there is a wonderfully different dynamic that happens when you sit down with other artists, even those who have never tried this medium before. something new comes forth. and of course, there is always something more to learn about art. always a trick or two to take away with you. and yesterday was no exception - yay!

for me, i noticed a couple of things in the process:

i had a vague intention in my head going in of the subject i wanted to focus on in the journaling session. i have a ton of new projects and opportunities that have come up recently. one in particular that i don't have a clue about how to tackle or organize. i'm a bit befuddled on "the next right step". the pages spoke to me about a direction to begin to head in.......

i made a concentrated effort to purposely "pick" the "right" images and words that would "go" with my vague intention....i kinda just picked up stuff, rifled through images and picked a few without too much thought. even closed my eyes, dug in a pile of words and grabbed something, sight unseen. courtney also had us choose a journal to work out of and i let the others choose first and then took one book that called to me out of what was left......i really felt that this type of "randomness" would serve my better than trying to "orchestrate" the outcome. and i was right! there was a serendipitous effect that had a lot of punch!

most times when finished with a journal page, i'm never really clear about what a page means. in this case, 4 out of five spreads had a meaning, however veiled. there was emotional and practical content to draw from. something to meditate on. something to pour over in my quiet time in the mornings. maybe something to jumpstart "the artists way" morning pages that i keep mean to start.....or that i've started several times and get sidetracked?? anyhow, nice to see a glimmer of something to work with....

i seem do more productive "product" work when i am working in a group. while i lovelovelove my puttering time in my studio alone, i like the dynamics of a group setting. push and pull of the doing......

i learned not to be heavy-handed with paint on the page. less is more and it's a whole lot easier to write over the darned pages if you don't have four layers of thick acrylic over the thing....

nothing ever turns out the way you think it will and that is super-duper A-OK! heck, they might even turn out BETTER!!!

heading to oregon this week to teach an encaustic class and a funky collage book class at my mom's abode. she's got the perfect setup for "art on the hill". here is a messy table (also shot in oregon, as a matter of fact) of art supplies and crazy art-making. my studio looks rather like this at the moment as i have been packing and planning like crazy for my trip......i trust when my students get done with all their own crazy-art-making, their tables will look like this one! who was it that said that "a clean studio is the sign of a dirty mind"....oh, heck, no, THAT's not how it goes.....ah, well!!

dear readers, all: i'm wishing you a most blessed season this year. it's been quite a lot of freakin' this n' that around here. medical emergencies and miracles....lots of art shows and opportunities and yeah, tons o' stuff that didn't quite work out the way i had planned, pounds lost and then gained back again. damn it. i'm sure it's been that way for you, too (hopefully without the weight-gain or medical emergency part). life has a way of happening, eh? i was going to wish for a trauma-free 2010, but that's not always gonna happen, so, instead i am asking for a year of being able to be at peace with what is happening around me. to have an inner peace in the midst of turmoil, should it come. enough emotional, spiritual and financial reserves to meet any challenge - good or not-so-swell. that seems more appropriate......and realistic! i wish that for you, too. for blessings to abound and inner peace when things are challenging...........and LOTS of art in between!

i'm going to take the next bit of time off from blogging.............bake jewish chocolate chip cookies for my step-daughter, granola bars for a niece, brownies with white frosting for my hubs, pumpkin rolls for my mother-in-law - sweet and sour meatballs for everybody else. and my hubs son is in the delivery room right this minute with his wife getting their own little christmas bundle named jack. things are gonna get hectic around here..............

i haven't been 'off-the-cuffing" much lately. mostly purposefully working on art class preps for a couple of classes this month and a host of others this coming year. but i'm not too worried. with the holidays a-comin' and the attendant stresses, i'm sure to get some more done. i do best under pressure, i think.

i had promised myself to get the christmas boxes of ornaments and decorations from out of storage by the weekend. uhh, it's still sunday, the 29th, right??HA. silly me, still not done. ahh, well........this week for sure.

frankly, like i said in my other blog, this is a tender time of year, well with medical family stuff and some financial crunches and all, the holidays feel simpler and somewhat more child-like? i'm not sure i'm communicating accurately, but i get my own drift.....hoping you do, too.

time for reflection, for gratefulness, for life with a capital L....so i leave you with what i guess could be called an off-the-cuff collage. i did this one as i demo at the fresh paint arts festival in everett this past august - in front of about 35 onlookers in about 13 minutes. i have started going off the edges of my paper lately, where previously i was constrained within the borders. i think that might very well be the wave 0f the future for me. literally and figuratively......going off the edges! in more ways than one!

took a trip south to tacoma on sunday with my artist buddy lisa jones-moore and two of her buddies to celebrate "dia de los muertes (day of the dead)" at the tacoma art museum. well, i tell you, number one, we couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous day. bright blue, sunny and actually warm! no kidding, we had to shed our winter coats mid-stream!

lisa had a birthday the week before (and strangely, i had one coming the very next day) so we did something that is close to her heart and new to me........immersing ourselves in mexican culture. the day was filled with colorful costumes, dancing, singing, sand paintings, sugar skull decorating, paper flower making and beautiful altars all in the modern and sleek museum. and let's not forget the burritos, too!

okay, i admit it, i always found the idea of a day for the dead a bit creepy. so much for my prejudices. heck, what did i know?? much to my surprise, i found that this celebration was just that........a celebration of those who have passed into another happier life! it was joyous, life-affirming and very uplifting. thanks, lisa for "noodging" me to come along.....i surely did have a super time!

(and the tacoma art museum ain't half bad. beautiful building, awesome dale chuhuly pieces exhibited, a wonderful show going on now of northwest artists (check out claire cowie). totally worth another gander......and a walk across the street to the chuhuly glass museum, too!)

monday was a very good day. jonathan talbot, collagist and teacher extraordinaire', was in edmonds giving a two-day workshop and i was lucky enough to drop by and catch the tail end of his class...........and lucky enough to grab a few supplies sitting about and attempt some off-the-cuff collages on site! here are the results............

here are a couple of my demo pieces for the fresh paint event (hosted by the arts council of snohomish county) last weekend. all created off-the-cuff, in front of an audience, live and up-close. i used jonathan talbot's technique (using no liquid adhesives) and whatever i had in my scrap paper heap. the first two used matboard as the substrate and the last two 140 lb watercolor paper. go to my bada bling blog for more photos of more collages (heck, i think i did over twenty during the weekend). as usual, a wonderful event...........gorgeous weather and swell peeps, great art!

there are those days. you know what i mean, don't you?? and the last little while i have surely been having them. talked about it more here, but in the meantime, here is a photo i took of a little corner of my studio bathroom counter-top. the whole bathroom is done up in funky-artist-style............cool mixed media art, little ceramic doo-dahs, little pieces of dirftwood, you name it and still in progress. i love little collections of things that mean nothing to anyone except you. little counter-top shrines, i guess you could call them. to be changed and mixed up at will, added to, subtracted from.....i love the whole concept!
